Monday seems like one of the most stressful days of the week. BUT, it doesn’t need to be that way.
After a nice and relaxing weekend, Monday is the first day of the week and not many people are looking forward to it.
I remember my school days. On Sundays nights I would often have an uncomfortable feeling in my stomach and a problem falling asleep thinking if I am ready for tomorrow. You probably know what I am talking about. Sometimes that happens to me even now. I am thinking about my clients….. have I prepared everything for them, am I going to be on time, where is my equipment, IPod etc.
That chatter in the head happens to almost everyone and the good news is that we can prevent and stop it. The key is in the BREATHING!
Breathing is the only physiological process that happens without our will but at the same time we can control it in order to change our level of consciousness and the body condition. In other words, breathing is not only a natural function of the body but also ability. With your breath you have power to control your stress, your mood, energy levels, concentration, alertness, body tightness, focus etc.
ALTERNATE NOSTRIL BREATHING is one of the breathing techniques I use every time I need to CALM my nervous system, BALANCE myself and RELAX:
- Close your right nostril with the right thumb and INHALE through your left nostril
- Close your left nostril with your index finger, open your right nostril and EXHALE through it
- INHALE through your right nostril
- Close your right nostril with your right thumb, open your left nostril and EXHALE through it
The secret is to do it at least for three minutes!!! Of course you can do it as long as it takes you to achieve balance and calmness.
Breathing in through your left nostril stimulates your right “feeling, calming, sensitive, intuition, creativity” hemisphere of the brain and breathing in though your right nostril stimulates your left “thinking, projective, logical, reasoning” hemisphere of the brain. Consciously alternating your breath between your nostrils you activate and balance your whole brain. Pretty neat, isn’t it? 😉
With this POWERFUL BREATHING you can set yourself to have a great beginning of the week. You can programme yourself to be RELAXED, positive, happy and exciting AND that will really happen.
Also, instead of thinking about Monday as the most stressful day of a week, you can start thinking about Monday as the most exciting day. It is the beginning of a NEW week, remember ….a new week not the old one so every week is different and it brings something new. When you change your mood through breathing, your energy level will change too. Once you set your mood to HAPPY, POSITIVE, EXCITING, LOVING, OPTIMISTIC, ALERT, FOCUSED your energy level will be at the same and you will attract the same. Your mood and energy will be contagious and nobody will be able to resist it.
